The Early Years

Norfolk Federation

The Norfolk Federation was formed in 1972. There was no formal fixture list; the clubs arranged their own fixtures and it was agreed that points would be scored in games between participating clubs. As you will see, there was a wide discrepancy in terms of the number of games played. The NF ran in 1972 and 1973, leading to the NCL proper which played its first season on 1974.

Forerunners

Although the league proper had its first season in 1974, there had been earlier attempts to organise cricket in Norfolk. In 1957 the Eastern Daily Press mentions a Norwich Cricket League which involved 14 clubs : Cherry Tree, Post Office, Defiants, Salle, St Lukes, Locomotive, Swannington, Costessey, Rackheath, Barford, Gas Works, Mattishall, Pages, Rackheath PF. Much later (July 1969) there was a Little League with10 clubs: Wanderers, CEYMS, Ingham, Mallards, Dereham, Lowestoft, Norwich Union, Carrow, Yarmouth, Cromer.

Grateful thanks to Barry Clemitson (Old Catton) for unearthing most of this information
